Key takeaways

  • Railway bills by usage: Hobby is $5/month including $5 of usage, then about $10 per GB of RAM and $20 per vCPU per month.
  • If you want predictable bills, flat-priced alternatives are Render (from $7 per service) and DockHosting (from $4 for all your apps).
  • For multi-region apps Fly.io is the closest match; for an always-on free sandbox, Northflank.

The best Railway alternatives in 2026 are Render, Fly.io, DockHosting, Northflank, DigitalOcean App Platform and Heroku. Which one fits depends on why you're leaving. Railway bills for the RAM and CPU you use (about $10 per GB of RAM and $20 per vCPU per month, with a $5 Hobby plan that includes $5 of usage). That's efficient for quiet apps and hard to predict when traffic or memory grows. The alternatives below either charge a flat price or offer a different free tier.

Why developers look for a Railway alternative

  1. Usage bills are hard to predict. A memory leak or a traffic spike shows up on the invoice. A flat plan removes the question entirely.
  2. The free plan is small. $1 of credit per month covers very little once a database and an app run together.
  3. Databases bill like apps. Postgres, MySQL and Redis use the same resource rates, so a database that idles still costs memory.

1. Render: closest workflow, per-service pricing

Render feels like Railway's dashboard with Heroku's pricing model. Each service has a fixed size and price: Starter is $7 (512 MB, 0.5 CPU) and Standard is $25 (2 GB). Free web services spin down after 15 minutes, and free Postgres expires after 30 days. In April 2026 Render restructured its workspace plans, and Pro is now $25 flat. Pick Render if you want known per-service costs and you're fine paying for each one. Details in Render vs Railway vs Fly.io.

2. DockHosting (our product): flat price for all your apps

DockHosting charges one flat price for a pool of memory shared by your apps and databases: Free ($0, 512 MB), Hobby ($4, 1 GB), Pro ($9, 3 GB) or Team ($19, 8 GB). There's no bandwidth metering, and the free database doesn't expire. You deploy with dock deploy or from GitHub, and databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Redis, ClickHouse) are injected as DATABASE_URL and similar over a private network.

Limitations: one region (eu-central-1), and one container per project. Pick DockHosting if you want Railway's "deploy anything" feel with a bill that never changes.

3. Fly.io: if you need many regions

Fly.io runs your app as VMs close to your users worldwide, billed by size and time: $2.19 (256 MB), $3.69 (512 MB) or $6.70 (1 GB) a month for shared-cpu-1x. There's no free tier for new organizations, and Managed Postgres starts at $38. Pick Fly.io if latency across continents matters more than price simplicity.

4. Northflank: an always-on sandbox

Northflank's Developer Sandbox is free with no card: 2 services, 2 jobs and 1 database or addon, always on. Northflank says it isn't for production. Paid plans start at $12 for 0.5 vCPU / 1 GB among those with a published price. Pick Northflank if you want to experiment with always-on services, or you'll later run on your own cloud account.

5. DigitalOcean App Platform: fixed containers on DigitalOcean

Containers start at $5/month (512 MiB), and static sites are free (up to 3). A dev database is $7, and managed PostgreSQL starts at $15.15. Pick it if the rest of your infrastructure already lives on DigitalOcean.

6. Heroku: the original, now paid-only

Heroku has no free plan. Eco dynos are $5 and sleep after 30 minutes, Basic is $7 always-on, and Postgres starts at $5. Pick Heroku if you rely on its add-on marketplace. Everyone else should see the Heroku alternatives.

Moving a project off Railway

  1. List your services and variables. Copy each service's environment variables. Railway's references between services become plain connection strings.
  2. Export databases: pg_dump --format=custom --no-owner --no-acl --file=db.dump "$DATABASE_URL" for Postgres, or mysqldump and mongodump for the others.
  3. Create the databases on the new host and restore the dumps (see moving a Postgres database for the exact commands).
  4. Deploy the same repo. On DockHosting, dock deploy detects Node.js, Python, Go, Ruby, PHP, Java or a Dockerfile, so no Railway-specific config is needed.
  5. Move workers and cron to separate projects that share a managed Redis queue.
  6. Switch DNS for your custom domain once the new deploy checks out. HTTPS certificates are issued automatically.

Apps that already read PORT and DATABASE_URL from the environment usually move without code changes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Railway free in 2026?

Railway has a one-time $5 trial for 30 days, then a Free plan with $1 of credit per month (0.5 GB RAM). Beyond that, the Hobby plan is $5/month including $5 of usage.

What's the cheapest Railway alternative with flat pricing?

DockHosting's Hobby plan is $4/month flat for always-on apps with 1 GB of memory shared across 3 projects and 2 managed databases, with no bandwidth metering. Render's Starter instance is $7/month per service.

How do I move a project off Railway?

Export each database (pg_dump for PostgreSQL), copy your environment variables, and deploy the same repository on the new host. Apps that read PORT and DATABASE_URL from the environment usually need no code changes.
